Henry Cambron passed along this information that may be of interest to anyone who carries a knife in Georgia:
Quote: There was a new state law passed concerning knives that will be good news to all of our members.
Kniferights.org worked with Georgia Senator Bill Heath and State Representative David Knight to pass Georgia's Knife Preemption Law (SB432). This was signed by Governor Deal and becomes effective July 1, 2012.
The bill basically says that no city can pass a knife-related law that is more restrictive that State law. If a city has an ordinance that prohibits an automatic knife or a blade over 3 inches long etc, it's no longer valid because there is no State law that prohibits those knives. Keep in mind that while the state preemption law prevents city and county governments from restricting your right to carry blades over 3" if you plan to carry a blade over 5" for defensive purposes (i.e.: not hunting) blades of those lengths are classified as weapons, and require a Georgia Weapons Carry License to carry. The same license that you would apply for to be legal to carry a firearm also covers the carry of blades over 5" in length. |
